Trying to draw simple polyline with points on different z coordinates

I'm trying to draw a slab that is sloped to a floor drain. My plan is to draw a polyline that represents the change in slope and use the drape tool (massing tab on palette) to complete the mass element. The problem I'm having is that I cannot select a point at a different Z coordinate unless I just draw a series of regular lines, which I've done, but then I can't join these line segments into one polyline.

I had a similar problem yesterday when trying to adjust a massing model. I have a vertical plane and want to adjust it out of vertical. I select the grip along the top of the plane, but AutoCad will only allow me to drag it either straight up or straight down. I still haven't solved this problem.

Any suggestions for either would be greatly appreciated.
