Sharing or networking computers to render with

Can anyone give me some information as to how I can utilise my laptop (Compaq nx9420 with extra memory) with my workstation (HP xw6400)
to combine to give me more processing or memory power for faster rendering.
I have heard that it is possible so I thought I would like to try it myself. My laptop is lying around doing nothing when I am at the office so it may as well get used if possible.

Well, you don't really: plus a slower older laptop 'laying around' is no
performance boost. And your Compaq nx9420 is very much the lower end of HP's
laptops, a POS for performance if I may be honest.

Upgrade to Win7 64bit from your original Vista 32bit on your decent desktop,
upgrade RAM to at least 8Gig, get rid of the basic 128MB video on the
system, and make sure your HDs are not more than 50% full and that's about
as good as it gets with your current hardware.

Hi Dermot
I assume you are rendering with ACA. Unfortunately it doesn't have the
ability to use multiple pc's to 'farm' render. That has to be part of the
program and it's not included. It is with MAX.
I'm still trying to attempt to download your image - keeps timing out.

How long are your renders taking? Mine take maybe 5-10mins but I'm
rendering to screen and just doig a screen grab mostly. Sometimes I render
to 2000x1200 or so and that can take around an hour.

Rendering is mostly CPU for speed though the RAM will help if you have too
little.

Maybe set it up with one pc and render with another.

Thanks guys, and I thought the laptop was quite good but I guess thats what 3 years does to computer hardware.
That render took about 30 to 40 min, it is up about the 1024 x 768 & was on presentation settings.
So that sounds like it is reasonable spped wise, more speed would be good to do good quality trials before a final humdinger.
