Can you be more specific about what is not working?

Can you see the ribbon, but none of the tools work, and you are not able to switch ribbon tabs?

Is the entire program frozen, or can you use Tool palette tools or type commands at the Command prompt?  (If the latter is missing, CTRL+9 should bring it back.)

Is the ribbon area blank?  (Try typing the RIBBON command and pressing <ENTER> at the Command: prompt.  Does that bring the Ribbon back?)

The ribbon and icons are there - it's just greyed out and I'm not able to pick on them. I can type in commands and they work fine. This only happens when I use the Mtext edit command.

Dean;

I'm not sure what you mean by reset Autocad.

Does it start out grayed out when you first open the program, or only after you issue certain commands?

If the latter, have you loaded both the ACA.cuix and the ACAD.cuix? Doing so results in multiple contextual ribbon tabs for certain actions, and this will lock up the ribbon. If there are items in the ACAD.cuix that you want, you would be better served by creating a custom CUIX and transferring the bits you want from the ACAD.cuix to the custom one, and then loading just the custom one as a partial customization file (assuming that the ACA.cuix is your main customization file.
