Realistic visual style does not work in object viewe on x-reffed part of drawing

I am working an a roof drawing. The walls are on a seperate drawing which is x-reffed. The realistic visual style does not work in the object viewer. It does not show the walls with brick. Only a solid color. the walls show up as brick in model space but not in object viewer.   I like to use object viewer to show my clients parts of the design readily.
