Problems with AutoCAD crashing

I've had recent issues with my AutoCAD Architecture 2012 crashing.  Actually, all my CAD products have been crashing (AutoCAD 2012 and Revit Architecture 2012 as well).  I've been working in larger drawings (anywhere from 2MB to 12MB).  Here are some of the error messages I'm getting:  FATAL ERROR:  Unhandled Access Violation Writing..., AutoCAD is running out of system memory.  Continuing the current operation may result in program failure or loss of data.., FATAL ERROR:  Out of memory - shutting down, AutoCAD cannot continue.... , Runtime Error! Program: C... R6025 - pure virtual function call.

I'm running a Lenovo ThinkCentre - Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz with 4G of RAM.  It's a Windows XP 32-bit OS.

I'm assuming that my issue is with a lack of RAM?  I'm currently trying to get our IT group to upgrade me to a 64-bit OS with more RAM.

Can anyone give me input on what they think the issue might be?  Is my assumption on RAM correct?

I'm just trying to provide justification to my IT department that my current system is insufficient.  Any input is greatly appreciated.

You are woefully underpowered for this product!    Memory aside, trying to run ACA on a 32-bit system is pure torture.  The first priority is to go to 64-bit.  After that, as much of everything  that they will let you have, and yes, definitely more RAM.

That's kind of what I figured.  This machine is just a standard workstation for the everyday user.

One more question...  My company has all computers set up so that when you're gone from your machine for a certain amount of time you have to log back in.  If I've got CAD open and have to log back on to my machine, CAD crashes most of the time when I log back in.  Is that a performance related issue as well?

Without a doubt, this is very much memory related. Tell your IT department that you need at least 4GB on a 64-bit system and a decent graphics card (not integrated!). And don't let them talk to you down. Smiley Happy

In the meantime, since you are running Windows XP 32-bit, you can turn on the 3GB switch. It gives you a bit more memory access, and can make enough of a difference to keep you from pulling out your hair. Take a look at: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=9583842&linkID=9240697

As for your question about CAD having crashed when you come back, also memory related. Programs keep grabbing memory even when you don't use them, so by the time you get back to your system, you are out of resources. Try to restart CAD more frequently throughout the day and you should see some improvement.

Awesome!  Thanks for the info.  I'll give it a shot.

I wanted to check in with you Chris to see if the suggestions from “tucker” helped resolve this issue.  If the issue persists after trying the suggestions above, please let us know in the community so we can collaboratively help towards resolution where possible.  In this case there will be a noticeable difference in performance from a 32x system versus a 64x system with the 2012 product line.   System OS combined with hardware are important in creating the best environment for performance within the product lines.  If the issue was resolved by the suggestions from the above contributors (tucker), please mark the forum as solved.  Thank you and we look forward to your response.

Michael, thank you for your follow up.  Unfortunately the 3g switch is not something I can do.  Our IT has us handcuffed.  I'm guessing that the best resolution is just for us to go to 64-bit systems with more RAM if we can ever get it approved.

Problem isn't in memory shortage or x32-x64 difference. I saw AutoCAD on x64 Win7 crushed after SAVE command (SAVE AS doesn't crushes!). Sometimes it fails on my cool work comp. It's a program bug unfortunatelly...

Hey, programmers!

With the 2012 program I would agree with the 64x system due to the market and the original intended build purpose for PC requirements around the 2012 product.  With the 64x system you will and should see better response and performance in functions with n the 2012 product line.
