partial hip gable roof

I have been trying to figure out how to make hip roof turn gable part way up the roof instead of at the bottom (which would be a gable roof).

thanks, alex

HI Alex

You can do it with slabs but I don't know much about them, but I can tell you how with the Roof object and I think that is what you are referring to.  It's quite simple to control.

Here is a video series I've made on the hidden secrets of using this tool. I think what you want is found in the first video.

at 5:40 of 9:38 adding vertices the big secret it shows how to do a gable like i need.

when i pick edit edges/faces like you do it shows one roof face edge in the bottom window and you add a second roof face by edge somehow but i have not been able to replicate it. what is the input proceedure for doing that?

Thanks, Alex

Essentially you select the roof, right click and select ‘edit edges’ (or find the option on the ribbon). This should bring up the dialogue box and allow you to select an edge (top box) and in the lower box click on a line under the existing slope and add a new (2nd) slope to that edge. You want a floating gable so the first slope should be a pitch (or run if that’s how you do it) and the second should be set at 90d. The height portion is the measurement vertically between where the first slope pitches off and where you want your gable to start, so say 600mm (2’) above. That’s why the first height is 0. It’s equal to the height set in the top box for that edge. If you select more than one edge, you can edit more than one at a time in that box, but ok, yes only one at a time in the lower box. Another fantastic resource is Odin’s at Archidigm.com here http://archidigm.com/classroom/adt_4_development_guide/adt_5_dg_cover.htm but be aware that I found new tricks that Odin wasn’t. Click on one of the options centre of page and then on Part 8. This whole website is a superb resource.

Just poke in the line under the default face line and a new face will appear.

How'd you go?

If the gablet is on a clear hip then it's easy to do.

If it's along another roof plane like your picture then it can be a little more difficult and tends to create a weird looking gable.  There is no way to contain the gablet to only the roof coming from behind (the ridge line) and it tends to spill over the wider roof plane in the foreground.

The only way to do that would be to add another roof shape on top and combine them all using the Model Explorer, a trick I show in video's with a dormer or cutting a hole.
