Material Swatches not visible

Hello, I found my question in a Thread from last year, but with no answeres. I will try it again. In our scholl we have an education version.

Now we are having trouble locating the material swatches in the Available Materials in DWG box on the materials palette. The materials being used are listed but the "yellow" outlined area is blank, as in there is no shape ( cube, sphere, cyl...) with material defined on it. The only visible one is the Global. This includes creating a new material.

How can the materials shown again in the material pallete. We can use the materials in our drawings, but we can not see them in the materials palette ?????.

I suspect that it's a memory issue.  I've had
it occur and restarting seems to fix it.

(i.e. let it dump the memory in RAM and start
again.)
