Incompability 2010/2009

Hi,
Created a model in ACA 2009 and saved as dwg 2007 format file a while ago. Now I opened it with ACA 2010 and added a few lines (2D graphics), saved it back to 2007 format. Send it to our customer who has ACA 2009...all architectural objects were displayed incorrectly.

So..AutoCAD is not backwards comatible here..great. Anybody has a suggestion of what to do now? I guess I could export to IFC for the architectural objects and then import the 2D graphics...but this is creating so much unnecessary work.

ideas are appreciated

It's no secret. New format DWG means ACA locks out lower versions: you have
the same problem if you saved ACA2009 down to ADT2006 or lower, ADT2004 had
it when saving down to ADT2002 and so on.

No fix, you now have to either recover a backup that has not been touched by
ACA2010 or move up to 2010 permanently.

>>>... in ACA 2009 and saved as dwg 2007 format file ...<<<

ACA2008/2009 and ADT2007 all are 2007dwg format.
ACA2010 is 2010dwg format
ADT2004/5/6 are 2004dwg format
ADT2000/i/2 are 2000dwg format.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your reply. I know about the different versions and formats. However..I also tried just to open a 2007-file in 2010 and save it as 2007 (original format). When I open it in ACA 2009 all objects are destroyed. All i you do is save it! You don't receive an error message or any warnings. You have not had this exact problem before. As long as you stick to the original file format you're good. Now..this is a completely different story.

First..this should be brought to the customers attention somewhere. Both resellers and Autodesk have a responsibility here.

I agree with you JM but it's been the case ever since ADT started. You have
had this exact problem before.
You generally have had 3 version of compatibility and then a break to a new
format where it won't save back.
2000-2003, 2004-2006, 2007-2009, 2010-2012?
You just crossed the barrier. And no, the newer release will not save aec
objects back to earlier releases ever.
That's why 2009 was saving as 2007 format though not all objects could be
read entirely by 2008 or 2007.
Personally I have always thought the advertising info was terribly
misleading but they don't want to frighten you - you might not upgrade!

Hmm..I don't remember having any problems as long as you saved in the same format. I have to try this..opening a 2004-file, saving with 2009 and reopening in 2006 version. Either way..a warning or notification would be nice.. Like "IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL SPEND HOURS AND HOURS OF REMODELLING!" Hehe!

what do you mean all objects are destroyed? Yes when you save AEC objects
create by any ACA/ADT version to a acad verion all AEC objects become dumb
lines and blocks. Plain autocad can not read those AEC objects, been that
way for years!

Thank you for your reply. I know plain AutoCAD can't handle the AEC objects, but that's not what I'm doing here. If you have the time please look at the attached movie below. I'm simply opening an 2007-dwg created in ACA 2009, in ACA 2010 and saving it to 2007-dwg again. Now, I can understand that if yu add or change any of the AEC objects, things would get weird. I would never do that.

Nevertheless, it's way too easy to mess things up by mistake. The versions look very similar and opening in 2010 instead of 2009 happens easily by accident. ACA 2010 adds info to the model even if I don't change anything. I understand this from an Autodesk point of view. Of course you want people to upgrade..but I think this is wrong way of doing it. There should be a warning before I accidently save it.

Look around both ADT/ACA discussion areas, this topic is covered every time
there is a new DWG format.

And yes, all you have to do is SAVE in the newer version, regardless of what
SAVE is set to for format, to upgrade AEC content and remove them from the
lower version. Again, this is only for AEC content, nothing else.

If you see 'destruction' in anything else you will need to post a DWG file:
we all have your versions and we can see your files.

If you open an AEC model format 2004 in ACA 2009 and just save it back to 2004. Do you get the messed up AEC objects if you open in ADT 2006? I'm not sure about that. That's why I was suprised that it happens in 2010.

Thought the movie explained this well. You can see the rectangles all over the model where the AEC objects should have been.

I posted this to see if there was a workaround for exactly what I did. I solved this by exporting an IFC-model and then import this in a new file..then insert the "non AEC-objects" as well. I'm mainly concerned for our customers that are "normal" users and not a geek like me. Still..I think a little heads up in a message window would be nice.

Unless you turned it off to never return, there is a pop-up message (see
attached): but it only applies to AEC content created by ACA (all anyone
around here is talking about).

The pop-up also provides tips on sharing with plain AutoCAD users.

Thank you for your responses and time. I use a lot of scripts/lisp routines and maybe I had a variable setting that supresses this message...or I turned it off and forgot about it.
Still, if it's this easy to mess up there should be a way of recovering the AEC objects imo.

Just to be clear. The model is not destroyed. It was upgraded. The
warning message is obvious and understandable by anyone bothering to read
it. The solution is to get everyone to upgrade or to continue to use the
older versions. Using older versions is permitted by your license
agreement. Next time find out what version your client expects you to use
and use only that version.

There are no cures for OE issues unfortunately: that only comes from
experience.

I learnt the exact same lesson with ADT2004 upgrades from ADT2002, you are
learning it with ACA2010. Pass it along.

Just be thankful you're using ACA which only changes format every 3 years, revit does it every year.
And to repeat what everyone has said, yes plain autocad objects are backwards compatible, but not AEC objects. Been that way since version 1. Doesn't matter if you set ACA to save to the previous version, the AEC objects do not go backwards. Got caught myself on the 2004 to 2007 format change, but know better now.
