Distance command in Architecture 2008

In earlier versions I would use the DISTANCE command (button) to find any distance or length regardless of the angle. In 2008 the DISTANCE command only works with ORTHO on, which doesn't help me if I need the length of an angled wall or the distance from a point to an exit.
