Detail Component Manager - Properties Dialog Box

We have just encountered a strange occurrence and I want to see if anyone else has encountered it before. 

We have a a work station that suddenly had the Detail Component Manager stop working.  When you would try to insert an items, the screen would flash a few times and nothing would insert.  We determined that it was not working because the properties dialog was not open.  Once we opened the properties dialog box, the Detail Component Manager worked correctly. 

I just tried the same process on another machine and the Detail Component Manager worked correctly, even if the properties dialog was not open.

Any thoughts from anyone on how to fix this or why it would be happening?
