Default Program...

Does anyone know how to make AutoCad 2009 the default program that opens files from folders and zip folders...?

We currently are using AutoCAD 2009 for drafting but we also have more current AutoCADs 11-12 versions,

before we recently changed our servers, which may have changed some default profile setting, if a file was on our desktop, in a folder and ESPECIALLY a zip folder, because you have to unzip it, and double clicked on the AutoCad file it used too open in AutoCAD 2009, NOW, when you double click on it it wants to open it up in the newer version.

We only use the newer versions right now to save down if someone else has a file in them, but we typical work in 2009.

Any thoughts on how to have 2009 as my default when you double click on the file?

Thanks

gf

Windows uses the last AutoCAD program you opened when accessing a DWG file. You can spend a lot of time and effort trying to stop it, but eventually the other programs steal it back.

While you wait here for the first method above, other options that always work include:

- Get in the habit of opening R2009 first (or whatever other AutoCAD version you need at the time) then it's OPEN command to check your drawings. Not much you cannot do inside OPEN compared to Windows Explorer (unless R2009 was hobbled, you can go inside ZIP files and more).

OR

- Grab a freeware called SENDTOTOYS (there are others as well) that let you add a specific program to the list, then you right-click a dwg instead of double-clicking on it and pick the program you want to use. It can be 2009 or the newer ones, add what you want to this list.

Here's an alternative solution that worked for me. I am on Windows XP Pro.

- Right click on any CAD file.

- from the pop-up list, scroll down to highligth "open with"

- on the next pop-up list, click "choose program" (normally the last selection)

- if a screen named "The File Type Assistant" pops-up, tick the option "open using already installed software", then click "OK"

- The "Open With" pop-up then appears, tick the box next to the words "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

- Then click on "Browse", it should then open the "Program Files" folder. Double-click on "AutoCAD Architecture 2009" (might be a different folder for ACAD 2009). Then look for the "acad" application file, select it, then click "open".

- The "Open With" pop-up again appears. Simply click "OK", then you're good to go.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Luther
