Compatibility Issues - 2008 (another R13?)

I am having severe compatibility issues and I am confused as to how we can, as users, can let this happen. Surely I am not the only one with this problem.

We had some consultants switch to 2008, so we decided to do some testing and upgrade ourselves. In our testing, we have found some severe issues with our current version (2006). First, if you saveas 2004 and then try to re-open in 2006, aec objects no longer show up correctly nor can you recreate or edit existing objects that were created in 2006 to begin with. I realize that Autodesk puts up a warning about this. But, how would we react if Autodesk made lines, arcs, and circles incompatible with previous versions. Are we going to be that complacent?

Second, we use Detail Component Manager (DCM) a ton. However, components created in 2006 create an error when we try to edit them in 2008. The binary compatibility of everything appears to be broken.

I want real solutions to these issues (exporting to AutoCAD and destroying my files is not a real solution). Even an object enabler for 2008 objects in 2006 would be nice.

In the meantime, I want people to think about how our customers would react if we did this kind of crap to them. We should not allow Autodesk to think that they are soooo powerful that they can get away with it.

I won't even start on the issues that I am waiting for patches on (accamera.arx fatal error for one).

If you were the only source for your services to your clients, they'd be in
the same boat as you right now LOL

DWG format changes has always affected ADT users: 2004 did it to 2002 and
lower, 2007 did it to 2006 and lower (your shock at it all is almost two
years too late). If you need ADT/ACA and need AEC, you have to figure out
how to give up 2006 and lower CAD access to those objects. That IS the only
solution, sorry. We dealt with it in ADT2004 too, nothing knew.

I did not care before. I have been an "AutoCAD only" man since R10. I have always steared people away from ADT because of various reasons. However, I just recently got a job where I have to support this junk until I can get them entirely switched to REVIT. All I can say is that the transition is taking way to long for my taste.

I could be mistaken becuse I only dabble with Revit but I thought it had the
same backwards compatibility issues. Is that not the case? Perhaps it is
about stability and less about compatibility in which case I would agree ACA
does not like to play nice with converted data. I am pretty sure that is
why I have some stability issues right now, just need to figure out why.

Yes, you are correct Revit is not backwards compatible with any previous
release. While you can open any Revit file that was previously created from
an older version you will not be able to work on a file created in version
that is newer than yours. Unlike Autocad which you you know is good for
atleast three years before the format changes. That is why subscription is
so important for Revit and ACA. Actually, I am suprised the OP is just
running into problems now, since it was the 2007 version when the format
changed and this issue has been discussed excessively.

OP seems too busy getting mad about old news: kind of feel sorry for his new
bosses, since he hasn't discovered yet that REVIT locks you out completely
with each new version. Maybe he'll rant about it next year over there when
he upgrades them all LOL
