Applying materials to AEC Polygons

I want to apply a material to AEC Polygons in order to bring them into Max and select by material. I've tried digging into the AEC Polygon styles, but don't see a material tab like I do with mass elements. Is this possible?

You used to be able to apply materials to pen assignments (1-255). You could then create AECpolygon styles with a solid infill using the appropriate pen number. You can no longer do that in 2007-2009, but you can apply materials to individual objects.

"but you can apply materials to individual objects"

What does this mean? I can't find a way to apply a material to AEC polygons, even individually.

Those materials don't make it across the file link to Max.
