Adding Spaces Error

I am currently attempting to add a space within a DWG. The problem is when I hover over the area that needs the space inserted, the red boundary line that outlines the potential area is not appearing. All walls and windows making up this room are all closed off. I have created a polyline around the area, then selected the "Spaces" command once again. I then selected the command "Select boundary", then selected the polyline at the "Select Bounding Objects" prompt; however, the command prompt states "1 found, 1 was filtered out" without inserting the space. Does anyone know what the problem is?

You shouldn't need a polyline if the area is enclosed by walls. The times
the red outline hasn't appeared usually means either a small gap or the
space layer is off.

Polylines can't bound spaces unless you have set their properties to be able
to bound spaces.

Well I'm not seeing a gap anywhere, and the space layer is turned on...
So how would I go about setting the polyline properties to be able to bound spaces? I'm aware that this is the long way of doing things, but when all else fails...
Thanks for your help!

See properties palette, advanced section with polyline selected.

I must have a different version than you because I don't have an "Advanced" section on the properties palette.... I have AutoCAD Architecture 2008.
Thanks anyway for your help.

Back then regular objects couldn't bound spaces.
Workaround: Create a 1 component 0 width wall style and Wall convert the
polyline to that wall style.
Better: Find the gap and plug it.

I can't say for sure why ACA is filtering out the space you're trying to create, but here's one possible workaround/test case.

Create four new walls that create an enclosed space. Try inserting a space using those walls. If it still doesn't work, repost and let us know what happened.

If it does work, select the space, and in the properties palette, change it to a "non-associative" space. Then move the white grips to relocate it to your original space. You can add or remove vertices afterwards to get it to the correct shape/size if necessary (just look up how under the help menu).

Time is too valuable to waste trying to figure out every single problem that comes along. Find a workable solution and move on. Sometimes programs and files are just screwy.

And I'm not sure why Doug suggested that you can't apply a space to a polyline in ACA 2008, because you can (unless I misunderstood what he was saying). Right-click the space tool in your palette and choose "Apply to linework or AEC object" and then select the polyline. It works best if it's a closed polyline (select it, type PE, then type C for close), but sometimes it works on open ones as well.

Good luck. Edited by: rosskirby on Nov 14, 2009 7:59 PM
