aca 2011-levels and cut planes

is there an easy way to toggle between floors in dwg model of a full building built in aca -walls-windows+ (like revit..)

The closets structure to this would be "Project Navigator", if I am understanding your question correctly.  It is an AEC specific tool found in ACA and AMEP that is similar but different in total functionality.  It has the ability to navigate from level to level as well as details once the building is created.  I have uploaded an attachment PDF that gives an overview on this tool.  please feel free to take a look and download for future viewing if you would like.

thanks.

but it would be nice to have it all in one fille.

the transmit between floors is much faster

and efficient, and whole.

the sections and elevations are created

from one model and not from a set of floor

plans files (slow, partial, and incomplete procces

comperring to revit)

you can easily  build a full detaild model building in aca

but that big disadvantage probebly is what making

the program disapearing...

I agree and have created my own (finally after many years) multifloor in one file system.  I am annoyed that it could have been provided OOTB with not too much effort from those who know more than I.  But I would only use this for residential (any size) or small commerical.  not for many floor flats or tall buildings.  The drawing would just become too bulky like it does in Revit or ArchiCAD.

I've blogged twice on my system (background anyway) and still have to post a final article

Check the blog below and link on left for MultiLevel.

btw VisionRez.com have developed a one file for levels in their customisation of ACA.

I'm presently doing this.

-Exterior walls, stairwells, elevators, any multifloor walls, etc.... located on the first floor level.

-All Interior walls on first floor set to disappear when Cut Plane (and Below Display Range of Display Configuration) are above.

-Reference this into Second floor drawing (Set at the second floor elevation).  Just like double clicking on the view in Revit for the second floor.  Get all my exterior walls and multifloor walls.

Could draw second floor interior walls in the same file, but when you draw it goes on the first floor and then you'd have to raise it up.  Above scenario of referencing in first floor to second floor sets it up as the same type of environment and result you'd expect in Revit (Using Project Navigator).

Elevations - Reference the modeling files I need into a View file.  Generate Elevations.

Sections - Reference the modeling files I need into View file.  Generate Building cuts.

Enlarged Plans - Callout tool to a view file.  Currently trying to pull multiple callouts from one view file to another, but running into an issue.  Might need to have separate files for each callout.  Not a big deal if that's the case.

Typ. Details - Already setting them up w/ model views pre-set.  Open a drawing / save current drawing as a view (model view pops up) / drag model view to a sheet.....BA DA BING.

Got schedules set up to extract Room Fin. Sched., Door Sched., Light Fixture Schedule, etc.....Adding QTY columns to get counts.....extracting sq. ft., etc...to get takeoffs, tonage of steel, etc....

I've looked at Revit.  It opened my eyes a little....helped make things a little more clear on ACA / MEP.  After looking at it and how it works, and doing a LITTLE bit of extra tweaking on ACA / MEP.....I can generate the same environment and get the same results.

I'm new to ACA but essentially I think I'm looking for the same thing;

I've a 3d model of the building done and elevations and sections generated, however when it comes to generating plans it is not easy; been trying to use vertical section generation but it never seems to pick up on doors or windows. In terms of switching between floors for modelling I've been just changing the cut plane. Project navigator sounds like a sledge hammer to crack a nut I don't want additional drawings unless they can be automatically generate correctly from the model, otherwise the dynamics and usefullness of modeling in 3d is gone.

I like the first quote and is why I've gone the way I have. For Resi work the PN is overkill but don't count it out. It's an excellant tool for organising separate parts of the building project and has many advantages.  May I suggest you work thru the help tutorial on the PN so you know what it does and how it does it because it does what you ask it to.

My reasons for going away from the PN is really because I am always rendering each project and the PN adds unnecessary steps to the process. Having all your materials in the one file really makes it simpler but there are other advantages when items between parts connect like 2 storey windows to staircases, ground floor to 2nd floor roof shapes etc.  I do still use x-ref's but the main model is contained in the one file.

To create a system that works I used layer naming to separate and also simplified the too many layers of OOTB and also lisp to automate the changing of layers, elevation etc.  That required a new Layer Key Style and some discipline in how to create blocks (no layers inside).  Many users hate the idea of dealing with layers because there are so many but I have trimmed down the number and use express tools and lisp to quickly control layers.  PN allows you to pay much less attention to the layers.
