define "updating/reloading" in more detail and explain what it is you want it to do afterwards.

Hello,

well, when the inserted file has been modified I save it and update/refresh/reload it (I do not know the professional term for this, sorry)

In this case nothing happens. The file stays in the state it was when inserted.

Thanks fr your help!

Regards,

BB

So you have two files open.  File1.dwg and File2.dwg.

File1.dwg has has File2.dwg attached as an XRef.  You make a change to File2.dwg, save File2.dwg and go back to File1.dwg and RELOAD File2.dwg and your change is not there?  Are you sure that the save was finished before you initiated the reload?

If they're both open in the same acad session, then you can't start the reload until the save is complete.  But if they're in separate acad sessions, you certainly can.

What happens if you close and reopen file1.dwg?  Does file2.dwg reflect the change(s)?  What KIND of changes are we talking about?

And FYI, Visretain only effects layer settings so unless the changes relate to layers, that's irrelevant.

Your description leaves some question about whether you're using the INSERT command, or the XRef command to bring the information from the 2nd drawing into the first drawing.  Can you clarify whether you are INSERTing the 2nd drawing, or Xreffing it?

Nice catch!  I hadn't even noticed the word "inserted".
