working with external pdfs

how do I see the whole pdf when moving within autocad? (it keeps turning into just an outline, and prevents me from positioning it correctly) also, why, when I select a window of objects within a pdf, does it select the whole pdf?  very frustrating. finally, why is autocad so slow when working with pdfs and/or png's?

PDF is an image (electronic paper plot if you will): you can't select parts of an image. Just like you can't on a print on a piece of paper.

Images inside AutoCAD are uncompressed: they just slow AutoCAD down. if you need to work with a mix of raster and vector formats all the time for your line of work you might find Adobe Illustrator a better tool.
