Whats' the best way to do ?

Hello,

I would like to know what's the best way to export a floor plan drawing from Autocad - so it's usable for 3dsmax ?

The drawing is verysimple. Floorplan looks like this.

Thank you very much for any little help !

Hi,

Just to add to the mentioned "import"-version ....

1) you don't have to prepare the AutoCAD file or to export it as 3DS Max can use the DWG-format directly

2) you should decide where you want to do the 3D-work, if you want to do that in 3DS Max you should be aware about "it's totally different to the AutoCAD 3D functions and usage.

3) besides of "import" you can also use the >>>File Link Manager<<< to get your AutoCAD drawing referenced into 3DS Max. The advantage here is that every change you do later in AutoCAD will be available with just one refresh in 3DS Max. So if you did a extrude of a AutoCAD-line in 3DS Max and after that you change the position of that line in AutoCAD ...just save in AutoCAD, refresh in 3DS Max and the extrusion is done at the new line-position.

The advantage here is that you don't lose any work in 3DS Max when you modify the AutoCAD file (while with "import" you already created a copy of your DWG, any changes within the DWG are not done in your 3DS file then)

The disadvantage of the File Link Manager might be a little bit performance + you can't optimize the geometry as goos as if you created the objects in 3DS Max ... what will not be a issue as long as you use just a small amount of geometry.

Good luck, - alfred -
