Recommendations for new Laptop for AutoCAD 2014?

My company is looking to purchase a new laptop to run with AutoCAD 2014.  The current one only meets minimum requirements and crashes everytime we are working in it.  We are looking for as many opinions as we can get on worthy laptops for this application.  I am hoping to stay around the $1000-1200 price range??

Thanks for any input.  I really appreciate it.

Will you work in 2D only or mostly 3D?

Are the files large or fairly small?

Will you do rendering with this machine?

For simple 2D drawings under 3MB almost any laptop made today will handle it.  If you need 3D and maybe rendering I don't think $1200 will get you remotely close to what would work well.

Hello from France

- The Fastest Possible Core i5 or Core i7 - Only ONE processor (it's ENOUGH)

With a Core i5/i7, you will have already 4 Cores ...

In fact, HP/Dell LapTop workstations (or other high end PCs) will propose only Core i7

(Core i7 only 5-10% faster than a Core i5 at the same speed, so ...)

- 8 Gb is really the strict minimum !

- Please 12/16 Gb Ram maybe more (24/32) if you plan to create BIG 2D/3D models

- Windows Seven Pro 64 bits because Win 8 and Autodesk Software is TOO young !

- Graphics card : NVidia Quadro 2000M Series 2 Gb is the best choice today if you have a lot of money

or Quadro 600M 1 Gb Series (cheaper) ...or any other ATi equivalent card (1 Gb Ram please)

- The fastest possible HD maybe SSD (expensive)

Good Luck, Bye, Pat

I like a big screen for CAD work, but price is a little out of your range  :smileysad:

I find that a numerical keypad is a must for CAD work - so go at least 17"

I would add the SSD drive for qiucker and more stable access to data, but this tends to drive the price up. With a limited budget it makes sense to focus on the CUP (multiple cores is a must), RAM and the screen. I've had good experiences with select Lenovo ThinkPad models, but Dell and HP have quality mobile workstations on offer as well.

Lenovo W530 is current favorite these days in our office: it's maxed out here but you might be able to get it down to your budget number.

But that may not cure your crashes unless you address that first: rarely do minimum specs contribute to a crash unless your old laptop is running WinXP and you are opening +25MB files with matching Xrefs and trying to render or do complex tasks.

I've been looking for a laptop to do AutoCAD on too, and I'm finding that most gaming laptops usually have the specs required to run CAD.  They can be a little pricey, but if you look around, some have the same specs that have been mentioned in this thread. ;-)
