Mtext Width

Here is an Mtext question: when I double-click on some mtext, it displays the text Formatting box.  If you click on the Ruler, this makes a ruler appear above the mtext.  At one end of the ruler, there is a double-arrow symbol that - if you double-click on it, makes an existing background mask exactly cover the mtext.

I have been doing a lot of mtext cleanup lately.  I have been double-clicking on the double-arrow for a while.  The double-arrow symbol has started to "shrink" in size, to the point where it is getting difficult to line up over it to double-click on it.

There does not seem to be any way I can control its size.

What is the solution?  Why has it started shrinking anyway?

2013, 2014, OR 2015?
I do not see this in 2015.

Double-clicking the double-arows over MTEXT 'resets' the Ruler to better fit the text already in place (vertically and horizontally). Whether there is a mask or not it's a great tool to "fix" mtext boxes that have been manually moved around: the mask feature just happens to follow the ruler settings.

In 2012, I cannot replicate your double-arrow-shrinking effect while testing a dozen mtexts in a file I have open.

Does restarting AutoCAD 2012 fix the problem?
What is your Windows OS and video card?

restarting has no affect. I loaded 2013 to see if it would be better but
the problem persists there too.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit, Intel i7 chip, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 video
card

Correct. I do not see this in 2015, but I also have never noticed it in any earlier version either.
