When usinig Measuregeom 'Distance' only delta x and delta y figures are being shown, any ideas on how to change to toatl distance especially on diagonal measurements?

It shows not only delta X and delta Y , But it shows following parameter also:
Distance,Angle in XY Plane, Angle from XY Plane,
Delta Z
Just see in command window(press functional key F2)
and if you want to change total distance then you can use dimensional constraints or lengthen command.
Hit F2 and see if the info is there but you're just not seeing it. Here measuregoem gives me the distance on one line and the delta XYZ on the next.
Enter an option [Distance/Radius/Angle/ARea/Volume/eXit] <Distance>:
Specify first point: Endp of
Specify second point or [Multiple points]: Endp of
Distance = 75.11864, Angle in XY Plane = 347.74937073, Angle from XY Plane = 0.00000000
Delta X = 73.40810, Delta Y = -15.93930, Delta Z = 0.00000
Enter an option [Distance/Radius/Angle/ARea/Volume/eXit] <Distance>: *Cancel*
Is there a way of clicking on point A then point B and having the total length appear on the line?
I have had this feature in the past but can't seem to find it on my new machine!

I think you can use dimensional constraints
or put DYN on by pressing F12 i.e. dynamic input in drafting setting tool.
In addition to the other suggestions, if Dynamic Pointer Input is enabled (DYNMODE=3) you need only select the object then hover over the grip.
