layer unmerge or layer by object

Greetings,

I apologise if this has been asked and solved in a previous thread, if so, please provide a link.

Is there an opposite command to layer merge? Like .. Layer by object?

Problem... DWG has one layer but many objects with different properties.

Would be convenient and quick is there is already a command to split the objects to new layers, new layers based on different object colour, object type etc.

Thx for reading,

Kevin.

At this time, it would be a manual process to do what you are asking. Once the new layers are created that you want to use, you could use the FILTER command to organize objects, and then move them to the new layers.

If you have an established list of Layers and the characteristics of things you want moved to them, a routine could certainly be built that would automate that process for you.  It could even, for example, take all objects with a Hidden linetype imposed as an override and put them on a layer with that linetype assigned to it, and remove the override on the objects so that their linetype is "Bylayer."  Not a super-simple task, but not dauntingly complicated, either.  One complication might be if an object has characteristics of more than one target Layer [e.g. has a linetype override that suggests it should go to a certain Layer, and is of an entity type that suggests another], so there may need to be some kind of hierarchy [e.g. go with linetypes if there is a linetype override, regardless of entity type, but if there's no linetype override, go with entity type].
