Something I saw as a flaw when adesk introduced the modeless layer/xref dialogs a few years go, was the fact they always acted immediately on a drawing.
That is no good for people that are kind of figuring out what they need to do as they go, as it interrupts the process.
Turns out BricsCad, version 13 at least and up, has a toggle for this:
Its very interesting to me that my comment to Autodesk was ignored early one, as I ranted on it quite a bit.
People in my office are starting to like BricsCad as soon as they try it. Fast and stable, with only a few things I am working on slicking out.
The biggest issues revolve around drawing corruption caused by Civil3D "Reverse lookup found" junk from way back that we have seen resurface recently.
THe less C3D we use, the more money we make.

Dean,
Like a good Doctor - "Don't do that then..."
I've used classic xref for years now but its embarrassing to adesk that they do not trust experienced users on things like this.
It revels a level of out-of-touch-ness that is higher than you would expect.
