IMPORTING SOLIDWORKS FILES

RECEIVED A SOLIDWORKS FILES, TRYING TO BRING OVER TO AUTOCAD,

RUNNING ACAD2013 WITH INVENTOR FUSION 2013,

DO I HAVE THE TOOLS TO IMPORT THIS FILE?

I don't think you have to tools to do it unless you have a license of Solidworks.  I do have a license of Solidworks 2010 Premium which should allow me to do it no problem.  The trick is the user with Solidworks must export the drawing to a .dwg format from inside Solidworks.  Post the file and I'll do it for you when i get home from work!

THERE IS AN OPTION TO IMPORT, BUT I THINK THEIR FILE MIGHT BE A VERSION BEYOND MINE.

I do not see any part files (*.sldprt) in the folder, only the assembly file (*.sldasm). 

An assembly file is simply a record of hyperlinks to the parts and instructions on how to assemble them and a bit more (think xref).

The source should have given you the parts - apparently they don't know how to use SolidWorks.

Most of the other information in this thread is also incorrect.

AutoCAD 2013 will read SolidWorks 2012 files.

SolidWorks 2014 did not exist when AutoCAD 2014 was released - so AutoCAD 2014 will only read up to SolidWorks 2013.

You can only open SolidWorks assembly and part files, not native drawing files.  SolidWorks can write out several other formats to go between different CAD programs.

As noted by others, this file is mising its External References (related PRT and ASM files).

When receiving SolidWorks Files, ensure that you receive all the necessary files. PRTs, ASMs etc.

The best way to receive all is to request a "Pack and Go" with all the options selected.

If it is necessary to import the solids only, as a placeholder or space saver, request a file type that AutoCAD can import readily. The format I have had most compatibility and least errors with is ACIS SAT.

!!Ensure that version 7.0 or below is also specified for the export as AutoDesk cannot import versions higher than this as they do not support later version for whatever reasons I wil lnto go into here.

This "simple" exchange format is useful when supliers cite "Proprietary Information" as reason not to supply 3D models because only the external parts, or surface geometry are exported, i.e. the "shell of the item.

There is no "free" SolidWorks viewer that will open native format files and save out to other formats.

NavisWorks Manage can import older versions of SolidWorks files, as can Inventor.

AutoCAD 2014 also should be able to import this file, however it cannot process the file, most likely because of the missing references.
