You can use F7 to toggle the grid on and off
Activate the viewport and toggle the grid.
The grid is in x-y direction, not z.
Guess you have to change the UCS, then you will see the grid.

so basically to show the grid in a side view you seriously need to change a construction plane alignment via changing what XYZ are in your model?

That sounds right. The grid is intended for the X Y directions. So to get it in a ‘side’ view or elevation view, either the UCS needs to get reoriented or the model/elements need to get reoriented.  If it’s just for one view, perhaps 'cheating' it would be a good approach –by copying and then rotating the model/geometry so you have the grid background without adjusting the UCS.

Or perhaps you could set the grid to follow a dynamic UCS (DSETTINGS) Then set the GRIDDISPLAY variable to 8. Then use a dynamic UCS. (Not sure if that would be closer to what you want?)

P.S. Thank you for your contributions as an Expert Elite! That’s an awesome program. Kudos!
