Files taking longer to open and save in AutoCAD 2014 than in AutoCAD 2008

Our comapny is migrating users from Wondows XP to Windows 7. These users work on version specific projetcs. These projects have profiles and tolls created for specific versions of AutoCAD. Now that our users have moved over to Windows 7, they are switching over from AutoCAD 2008 to AutoCAD 2014.

The first thing our users noticed was that their files take a longer time to open and save in AutoCAD 2014 than they did in AutoCAD 2008. we are not talking a couple of seconds either, more like 25 seconds.

So after playing around with the files, I have found that there are font styles that have big fonts associated with them. If I changed all of the text to use the Standard style which uses the simplex font, then the files open and save with no issues. This cannot be the fix though, since these styles were intended to be used with certain annotations.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Big fonts were an ... 'interesting' idea to get around 1980's limitations.  With the development of unicode, and its implementation in Acad, Big Fonts are really nothing to try and hang onto.  The problems you see will only expand as time and versions go on.

My recommendation is to upgrade and correct the drawings as you move forward.  Where a bigfont is being used, replace it as you go, and correct the annotation using 21st century glyphs from standard adesk or windows supllied fonts.

You can of course, choose to try and retain the old scheme, but do not be surprised if additional problems crop up in the future.

R2008 is smaller and faster than R2014
WinXP is smaller and faster than Win7
Missing fonts and big fonts don't help matters as noted above, as are any XP remnants left in your setups that Win7 may be getting around.
Same applies to your server and how it was transitioned for your systems.

Don't miss the first two sentences in this reply though: they are the primary reason.
