easy 3d rotate question, please help :)

when I use the 3d rotate command on solid objects, sometimes I get the helpful gizmo that displays and allows you to select the different axes of rotation....and sometimes it doesn't come up.  How do I make it come up if it is off??

I will email a free tasty beer and bag of cheetos to the first genius who tells me how!!

eeerp, I figured it out, (needed a 3d viewing style) I'm keeping my beer and cheetos!  nom nom nom
