DXF files received having Japanese bigfont.shx is unreadable

Is there any way to convert a drawing using the Asian Bigfont.shx font back to English? The font can be changed, but the characters remain un-readable. Mostly ? and letters and symbols but no words. It seems like it needs to be translated, and not just converted, but it is not displayed in any form that could be translated.

There is no built-in translation ability in AutoCAD: are you also having difficulty loading the bigfont? Where did you place the file and is AutoCAD complaining it cannot find it when you open one of these files?

I looked in the style manager for the font used in their "standard style". It uses the base font of txt.shx with the "use big font" check box checked, and bigfont.shx as the big font. I do not know if I have the bigfont.shx loaded, and I am not sure where to get it.

You get the big font from the same source as the DWG file.
