copy/paste problems

Anything I copy from 2013 and paste into 2011 turns into a raster image. What am I doing wrong. I have never had this issue 2010-2012.

Hi,
How do you copy from the source drawing?
Do you use Ribbon/Toolbar buttons, or shortcut key,or command line?

Have you tried to use COPYCLIP or COPYBASE commands from the command prompt in the source drawing?

Hi,

>> Anything I copy from 2013 and paste into 2011 [...] I have never had this issue 2010-2012

2013 has a new file format, so the objects are of a type like "newer generation" (while 2010 has the same format as 2012).

So if you paste anything from 2013 into 2012/2011/2010 you import "unknown objects" and so it is imported as OLE object.

You can run command _WBLOCK and save the selected objects into a 2010-DWG file, then use command _INSERT to import this DWG into your 2011-drawing.

You do know 2012-2011-2010 are the exact same versions of DWG, so your old habit was a total waste of time: you could have opened both files in either 2012 or 2010 and copy/paste between them.

2013-2014 are different DWG format as noted above, so you get the result you noted. Is there a reason your are not opening all your files in one program or the other?

I found the best solution is to save a copy back to the old 2010 format, then copy and paste like normal.

@pendean: I use multiple versions of C3D because different clients require different versions. Some clients do not have the latest C3D every year. I don't know what you mean by "old habit". Opening a 2010 drawing in anything except 2010 will ruin it, same with 2011, and 2012.

That's not ... entirely accurate.  Smiley Happy

You can open an earlier version DWG file with a later ACAD program and as long as you don't save it, it will not change the drawing file format.

Opening and saving a drawing will ruin it.

That's not ... entirely accurate, either.

It can always be converted back to lower versions thru DWGTrueview.  Granted, it will dimb down the drawing from later versions, but it will still function as a drawing file.

DJ

If you know a way to save back from 2013, 2012, or 2011, to 2010, or any other combination of saving back, without losing C3D functionality, I would like to hear that. Otherwise, stop trolling.

I don't troll.  I provide solutions.

Ironically enough, if you had mentioned that you were running a vertical in your original post this issue never would have arisen.  You would have been directed to the C3D forum where you could get applicable help.  This forum is for vanilla AutoCAD.

BTW ... I did mention that the DWGTrueview will dumb down any later version special objects if you convert down.

Please keep your comments on the professional level.  This is a peer group forum and no one here is trying to mis-lead you.

Regards,

DJ

I posed in this board because my issue was directly related to the AutoCAD 2013 DWG Format, not just C3D.

Also, what you said is not entirely accurate. You said, "it will dimb down the drawing from later versions," not dumb down. There is no hypen in the word mislead.

I apologize for the typo (i is right next to u ya know Smiley Wink ) and the incorrect grammar.

C3D and Vanilla ACAD are 2 different animals.

Again, please keep your  responses on the professional level.

>>>...Opening a 2010 drawing in anything except 2010 will ruin it,...<<<
If that is true in C3D, then it's a unique problem in C3D and you should be posting over there my friend.

In Plain AutoCAD where you are posting opening files in the same format as no effect: 2010-2011-2014 and 2013-2014 (and presumably 2015), 2008-2008-2009, 2004-2005-2006.

Consider seeking the correct help from your C3D peers in that forum is you disagree as you may have other things going on outside of plain AutoCAD's simpler abilities.

Good luck.

That's not what I was posting about.

I was posting about copy/paste from 2013 into an earlier format.

The user drjohn changed topics and started talking about saving files back to earlier formats, to which I replied. I have no problems with whatever you are talking about. The issue is in the correct board and has been solved.

Good: I'll recap. You can't copy/paste from 2013 to 2010 as noted above.

When I try to copy a drawing to word I do not get the drawing but a text on the screen where the drawing is stored.

What is wrong?

Thanks for the help.

What method are you using exactly? Describe it in detail: note that you cannot just drag and drop a DWG file into MSWord, that program doesn't know what to do with it (look inside MSWord's HELP file for supported files that it can read).

If you never had a problem doing it your way, what's different this time? You don't seem to explain your methods very well.

MAC forum is here http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-for-mac/ct-p/3011, you are posting in the Widnows forum.
