change to model in layout viewport?

Can you make changes to the model if you are in a layout viewport and model space or do you have to go on the model tab to make changes? thanks.

If you are working within an active viewport you can make the changes to the model.

Maybe better locking the viewport first though, so you don;t change the scales etc when you zoom/pan etc
