AutoCad 2014 Freezes when selecting objects

Whenever I try to select objects (lines, polylines, circles and occasionally some text) AutoCad freezes, displaying that the program is nonresponsive for about one minute. This computer should have no trouble completing this task in seconds.

Specs: Core i7 @3.4GHz and 16GB of RAM

I'm fairly new at using AutoCad so any help will be appreciated.

If you restart AutoCAD, start a new blank empty file, draw a few lines, then try to select them do you have the same problem?

Yes, however the problem only occurs with a couple thousand lines.

I just moved 5111 items as a test for another post in 2014 and nothing froze up at all. So it's probably something unique to that file. Can you share it?

I'm afraid not, but testing it on a coworker's computer, there was no problem. I'm thinking it must be some setting that is enabled/disabled that is creating the problem.

OK, so now we need to figure out what's unique about your PC that your colleague and I cannot replicate. Where to start... .
