AutoCAD 2014 - Dialog Boxes Not Saving Location

Hi All -

Like said in the title, whenever I open AutoCAD 2014 (happens with 2011 as well), the Layer Properties Manager, Properties Dialog Box & Xref Dialog Box just show up on top of each other on my second monitor where I work. I like to keep those boxes open on my main monitor. My workspace is set to 'Automatically Save Changes' and all toolbar locations save...This has been an issue since I got a new laptop a few weeks ago. Was NOT as issue with my old PC.

Edit: the Mtext editor does not save location either. It will show up on top of text I'm trying to edit or some random place by the text. Before the new laptop, it would always show up above where I was editing.

Currently running Windows 7 bit, laptop docking station, 2 monitors. (laptop stays closed).

been yrs and many versions ago since I last used a dual monitor setup - but the trick back then was you had to have a small portion of each window on your 2nd monitor hang over into your main monitor in order for the position to be remembered/saved.

Do you recall doing something like this before?

Makes sense, but no, before the new laptop I didn't have to do that, I had them freely 'docked' on my main monitor.

AutoCAD does not have any built-in, configurable support for dual monitors and dual video cards. You may use a dual setup with AutoCAD, but the way it works is dependent on the following:

  • Operating system
  • Graphics card(s)
  • Display driver

The functionality of any dual monitor or video configuration is entirely dependent on the above factors. Before you purchase additional equipment, determine the functionality you require and then verify that the proposed solution (operating system, graphics card, display driver) meets your requirements.

The Windows operating system is designed to support multiple graphics cards with primary and secondary monitors. You can drive two monitors using graphics cards from different manufacturers. You may run the graphics cards at different resolutions, color depths, and refresh rates. However, AutoCAD itself does not go through testing or certification under dual graphics card and/or monitor environments. Please refer to item 12 at the following link:

Certified Hardware - Frequently Asked Questions

The Autodesk hardware certification test is conducted using only one graphics card with one monitor attached. However, it is quite possible for an untested environment to work. Many customers are able to successfully use AutoCAD with multiple monitors. Multiple video cards, on the other hand, may be more difficult to implement but are not out of the question.

Here is the acutal link to the Autodesk Knowledge Base article that this information came from as well as another article that references this subject as well.

Fixed it, it was an issue with AMD Catalyst Control Center. Ended up un-checking "Enable Dialog Repositioning" under Start>Desktop and Displays>HydraVision>Desktop Manager.

That solved it for me too!! Thanks for the tip!
