Applying material to internals of an object?

Now I suspect I'm probably missing something very obvious here, but I am completely new to Autocad and purely using it as a requirement of a single piece of coursework!

Anyway, the question I have is regarding applying materials to an object. As far as I can tell when applying a material to an object it is simply applying it to the outside, and leaving the inside of each solid object the same colour as always. This is causing me a problem in that I need to take a section plane of a structure which has a number of bars running through it, both the object and the bars are different materials, but because they are very near flush, and because the material colour & texture only applies to the outside of the material it is **** near impossible to see the bars on the section plane.

So is there any way to apply a material to the entire object rather than just the external face?

Thanks very much.
