Acad Arch.2015 unable to modify objects by selecting then using shortcut command

I have recently lost the ability to modify and object by selecting the object then typing in the shortcut command. For example, selecting lines or text, then typing 'e' for erase or 'm' for move. when I do this I activate the command then have to reselect the objects. Any thoughts on how to change this? I have already done a complete reboot of my system.

I found it. The system variable is PICKFIRST, set value to 1.
