Merge contour lines with data points, create profile in GS Plan

I have contour lines and borehole data from an area and I want to merge them. When I add the borehole data to my contour lines I can see that they end up on the 0 point on the x-axis even though they contain z-data. If i run a profile with GS Plan I get the borehole data with the correct depth but I do not get the topography.

How do I merge these data sets? I have tried to raise the borehole data manually so it is in the same z-level as the contour lines, does not help.

I then thought I could create a surface out of my contour lines with e.g. drape or create surface. I do not find the drape function (saw it on youtube) and I can not make the create surface function work.

Currently I am trying to work with layers, e.g. merge. Maybe change layer properties. But I do not know if that is the way to go.

Any tips?

Cheers

Are you using vanilla AutoCAD, or AutoCAD Civil 3D?

The AutoCAD 3D surface object wasn't really designed to support topography. Depending on the relief (and by extension contours) of your site, the AutoCAD 3D Surface tool simply will not work.

Based on the description of what you're describing, I would recommend looking to AutoCAD Civil 3D. It speaks the very language of what you outlined you were trying to achieve.

Let me know if you are in fact using Civil 3D, and I can reply with the specific workflow for using it.

Thanks for your reply. I haven't heard of Vanilla Autocad. I am using Autocad 2017. We were hoping not to have to invest in the Autocad Civil 3D as we would only need a fraction of what it offers.

More tips appreciated;)

Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Vanilla describes that it is the plain, full version and not a vertical such as AutoCAD Civil 3D.

While I agree that Civil would be much better suited for this activity, there is likely a way that you can facilitate it in plain AutoCAD as well.

I believe the best process in moving forward would be to move this thread to the customization forum to see if others have already developed programs that can do this for you.  You might also want to check the Autodesk App Store to see if there is any plug-in or application that can help.

You might attach a sample drawing and dataset to a post so others can get a better idea of how you are currently working through this process.

Hi @Anonymous,

Did you have a chance to click on my link to the App Store? There a lots of great toys and utilities there that might help.
