Windows commands causing unresponsiveness and crashing

Gday,

We have 2 workstations running Windows 7 64 bit SP1.

The machines are both equipped with an Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz processor and have 32GB RAM.

The C:\ drive is a 256GB SSD and the E:\ drive is a 1TB HDD.

Both have reported unresponsiveness and crashing of autocad. They are using Autocad 2011 LT.

Things such as right clicking to view a dropdown of commands will take 20-30 seconds to execute. Copying a single line and then pasting will cause the same slow response.

We have eliminated the network as a cause by running all CAD files locally, and we are pretty confident in saying that it is not the workstations themselves as their old workstations reported a similar (but much worse) issue.

I am not a regular user of Autocad, I am simply the IT Admin looking after the workstations.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'll get this started and I'm sure others will add to the list of changes you can try for this issue:

You didn't mention the graphics card and they are critical. You may want to search the forums for other solutions.

  • Disable Aero Theme(s)
  • Toggle Hardware Acceleration

HTH a bit

Regards,

DJ

Oh my bad,

I knew i forgot to list one of the specs.

Graphics card is: nVidia Quadro K2000

I know that we did have problems initially with having hardware acceleration turned on(or off), and we toggled it and it resovled alot of Autocad performance issues. Ill try that one again and see if it helps.

Ill also get the guys to disable Aero and see if that helps.

Will report back with my findings.

This may not be same thing, but worth trying: we had plenty of stability problems with AutoCAD Mechanical 2012 and Teamcenter on 64-bit Windows 7. Changing AutoCAD to Windows Vista SP2 compatibility mode helped on that.

I think your hardware is probably acceptable. System requirements for AutoCAD LT 2011

A list of items that can speed up performance:

  • Add AutoCAD folders to your Anti-virus exclusion lists.
  • Turn off Communication Center
  • Make sure your support file search paths are all pointed to valid locations
  • Turn off dynamic input
  • Turn off quick properties
  • Turn off selection cycling
  • Turn off hatch preview
  • Make sure object snap is ignoring hatch objects
  • Minimize the number of running osnaps
  • Turn off selection preview
  • Dock the command line if it is floating
  • Purge the drawings
  • Purge regapps (At command line only)
  • Reconcile layers (even if your users have this feature turned off)
  • Remove excess annotation scales (scalelistedit, reset)

Run Process Monitor from Microsoft. That will identify where and why A ad is stalling.

Quick check though... unplug the network cable, restart cad, and see if that makes a difference
