Thanks!  That does solve the problem, but I'd really like to know how the constraints got there in the first place and how to keep it from doing this in the future

i was fiddling around with the constraint / parameter tools one day to see what they were all about and they left that glyph / symbol on my drawing even after i thought i deleted all the changes i made. so i did some research and discovered the solution.
