Tangent Lines to Circles

Hi All,

In my old version of Autocad 2007, To create a tangent line to a circle was easy, draw a circle, start a line and the select tangent from the Object Snap tool bar, click anywhere on the circle and the line would follow you.

In my latest version, 2011, I just cannot seem to get the same flexibility.  Surely there's got to be a way it's just that I cannot find it.  Can anyone help with this problem.

Dave R.

Nothing has changed. It still works the same way in 2011.

Can you elaborate on "cannot get the same flexibility"?

Make sure you are using line and not pline.  It works fine on my 2011 setup.

Not sure if this is 2011 specific, but I was just doing some tangent LINES and my line was snapping tangent to the other side of the circle (see example) The Blue Arrows are the Tan Snaps and the Blue Line is what was Given, the white line is what wanted and should have gotten.

....you could also use Geometry Constraints rather than osnaps and build rock-solid geometry relationships.

Hi RK McSwain

What I meant was that once I create a tangent point on the circle the other end of the line is free to move and placed where required, in my case, at the end of another line.

BINGO!!  GOT IT.

What I needed to do was clear all object snap modes in the set up and just have the tangent one ticked.  That gave me the flexibility that I had with 2007.

Thanks all for your replies.
