Sectioning surfaces

Hi,

I would like to know if there is a way to section a group of surfaces which make a terrain that I have so that when they are cut, one clean line is extracted for a 2D section. Currently when I use the SECTIONPLANE command you can see the whole length of the selected surfaces and it is difficult to see the true topography.

Thanks in advance.

Michael

Hi,

can you show a drawing? So we know what geometry type you have exactly when you speak about "surface" (what type of AutoCAD element is that).

Additional to the drawing can you describe what you mean by "it is difficult to see the true topography"?

Hi Alfred,

Thank you for replying. My surface is made from a 3DFACE converted to a surface using CONVTOSURFACE. When I section the selected elements, the entire depth of the surface is visible but I require only the cut line for a clean section, what you would ecpect if you sectioned a solid.

This is an example of the cut line created when I section my surface. You can see there is depth to it where I only require the cut line.

Hi Michael,

It sounds like you are trying to cut a surface profile (like you might in Civil 3D), but using only the AutoCAD 3D surfaces and sections. Is that correct? You may be able to get close by editing your 2D Section Settings.

  1. Pick the Section Plane
  2. Right-click and pick Generate 2D/3D Section
  3. Click Section Settings at the bottom
  4. Set the Show to No  under Background Lines, Cut-away Geometry, and Curve Tangency Lines
  5. Click OK, and then Create

Thanks 🙂

Hey Christina,

That's my girl 😉 Thank you I forgot about the section settings and incedentally I had it set to 3D section instead of 2D.

Thanks,

Michael
