Linetype

Is it possible to create a linetype that has a shape that and spacing between the shape that would always be the same? I want to create a linetype that would have a shape that would always be 2 feet across with 20 feet between each occurance whether its in a 20 scale view port or a 60 scale view port.

Linetypes are annotative elements.  So the answer is no.  There are many variables that affect the distance between dashes.  Try a dynamic block instead.  If you need curves, then a path array might do what you want.

Another question for you. The following linetype definition

 

*TEST,
A,0,[TRAFFICDRUM,W:\ACAD STDS\LINETYPES\TRAFFICDRUM,s=.0500],-1

 

Basicly shows a filled in circle at 1 foot interval.  If I have it in a 1"=20' viewport the linetype may have 29 feet from the last shape to the end point when it should be only 20'.

segments at either end of a complex linetype adjust to fit the space.  If you need exact spacing, look into the MEASURE and DIVIDE commands. 

 

Or dbroad's suggestion of dynamic blocks.

 

Linetypes in Autodesk's world are symbolic representations, and not exact.  Trying to force a line type patter to be a geometrically correct representation of real-world elements is a recipe for frustration.

That is one limitation of the linetype.  You should also check to see that the spacing from the first enpoint to the first circle is what you expect.  

 

If you are in control of the linetype scaling and exact modules of length, you can get some reasonable control but when sharing files, if another drafter likes to use a ltscale of 0.5 rather than 1 and msltscale=1 and psltscale=1, then your spacing and sizes will be off.

 

JGerth's suggestion of measure or divide is a good one, with the use of blocks. I use that a lot.  There is no association of the placed blocks with the original curve though.  So if you move or extend an arc or line, the blocks stay in their original places.

 

Verticals(like ACA) have layout curves.  If you have ACA, you might want to experiment with that.
