Is there a setting to change that will automatically close drawing1.dwg when opening a drawing?  My computer used to do this but I have added addoc.lsp to my setup and run a couple lisp files from a previous company on startup.  Is there something in those lisp files that may be disabling the automatic close function?  What should I look for?

Those lisps register in AutoCAD as a file change, so the answer is no unless you want to go with the drastic fix noted above with SDI.

BUT... if you upgrade to R2012 you can set STARTUP to 2 and you can then start AutoCDA with nothing preloaded. Since you are in R2011, set STARTUP to 1 and make a choice of just let it sit there until such time as you are ready to open a specific file.

Thanks... just what I was looking for... I know it didn't work in R2011... and when I started working in R2012, it worked just great... I think when I started using my 2011 preferences in 2012, it then reverted back to opening up with Drawing1.dwg... All is well now...
