'Drawing file not valid'

I received a drawing from a customer, via email. When I go to click on the name, I can see a postage stamp image of the drawing itself, but when I go to open it, I keep getting a 'Drawing not valid' error.

I get this message whether it's AutoCAD, or True View.

I looked through the properties of the program, I didn't notice anything peculiar that would stop it from opening up. I also made a copy of the dwg file and renamed it, thinking the original was write protected, still no luck.

Any ideas?

Hi,

maybe your customer works with a AutoCAD relase that's newer than your's?

Compare it, and in case of my guess is correct your customer can save to an older DWG-format.

Thanks Alfred,

That is a possibility, however, the drawing was originally created in 2008, and last updated in 2011.

We are currently using ACAD 2012 in our office.

Hi,

ok, when your customer does not use AutoCAD 2013 then you should be able to read all DWG-files.

So the next option: have you retried to receive the file with a new mail? Just to make sure that not the file-transfer through internet had some disruption.

What happens if you try the command _RECOVER instead of _OPEN, does that repair the database?

We got a message from the customer that the drawing was saved as an AutoCAD 2007 file.

I don't know if I can do any type of recover function, if I can't open the drawing.

Everyone in the office has tried it, and cannot open it. Unfortunately I am not at liberty to contact their engineering staff myself.

When I have another CAD session open, and choose _Recover, I get a message that the drawing cannot be recovered. When I choose _Open, it gives me the 'Drawing not valid' message.

If possible, I would like to send this file to someone, rather then post it in the forum, to see if they can find a solution to the problem.
