I am currently troubleshooting a print driver error that cause AutoCAD 2012 to crash when printing to a Dell Color Laser 3110cn. I have used the "Add a plotter" wizard to setup the printer as a plotting device without issue. I can select the printing device from the plotter selection drop-down menu but the product crashes immediately following the click of the "Print" button.
I have researched this topic and followed the advice on many of the posts in the forum related to print crashes. To date, I have successfully printed to the "soft" plotter devices that come preconfigured in AutoCAD 2012 (i.e. PDF, DWF6, etc.). I have updated the drivers for the printer to the most current version available. I have installed the printer as a network printer (managed by a print server) and a local printer (installed via Standard TCP/IP Port). I have also changed the driver from PostScript to PCL5 to PCL6 in both the local & network installs of the device.
At this point I am hesitant to install the HP LaserJet 4/5 drivers simply because 90% of the drawing files are color and will require color prints. Our workstations are Dell Latitude E6420's with 4GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Microsoft Windows 7 Professional - 32 Bit.
I would appreciate any assistance that could be offered.
Can you print to another plotter/printer?
Does it show any error message?
Are you requested to send an error report to Autodesk?
Does the service pack help?
Are you able to print/plot a new file with just a few lines?
Do you have many printers in the drop-down menu?
As you mention this does not happen with PDF or DWF, this is most likely to be an incompatibility with the printer driver.
Have you tried the usual plotting troubleshooting techniques?
Example: disable background plotting, process document in computer, remove old PC3, CTB, STB files, etc.

Thank you for all your help. Here is the progress I have made:
First, I tried printing to the other plotting devices (physical) and experienced the same issue. When we try to print with the native drivers for any of our printers the application crashes and sends an error report.
Second, I removed all of the physical printers that were installed. Then I installed the most current drivers I could locate for the dedicated plotting device (Dell Color Laser 3100). Finally, I attempted to print and received the application crash message again.
Third, I finally set the printer to use the HP LaserJet 5 print drivers. This allowed the application to print without crashing. So we are functional at this point.
The issue that I need to tackle now is finding compatible "color" drivers for the Dell Color Laser 3100 printer. If anyone has suggestions for the color driver alternative to the Dell drivers then please let me know as a large majority of our engineering drawings are color coded.
I have the same problem and I also found the LaserJet 5Si driver trick to be the only solution. When AutoCAD crashes it crashes hard with no warning and no option to send a crash report. We run the product on a wide variety of client operating systems (XP pro SP3, Vista, Win7 in both 32 bit and 64 bit). It happens on all of the machines eventually. It will usually print after the software is first installed but after a few weeks of use by the end user they will always call to report that the system crashes when they try to print. We can print to a PDF without any error as well as a custom PC3 file using the LaserJet 5Si driver.
We use a Windows 2003 Server as a print cluster. The users connect to printer shares on this cluster. In our case all the printers are HP units (9000dn and 9050dn). The print drivers are all up to date on the servers and I have even installed the universal print driver and configured a shared printer using it (both using PCL6 drivers). All give the same result. The only application we have problems printing from is AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical. SolidWorks, Microsoft Office and all our other main-line applications work just fine.
My biggest gripe is that this bug has been happening since AutoCAD 2009 was released. I wish Autodesk would devote some time to work with some end users to really find out what is happening and get it fixed.
I had the same problem with our HP LaserJet 5200 on a print server and AutoCAD Electrical 2012. I was able to resolve it by uninstalling the printer from my computer, restarting, and installing the newest driver from HP's website (I used PCL6, "upd-pcl6-x64-188.8.131.5244.exe"). During installation I installed it as a local printer thru it's IP address.
If you are using a print server that still has the printer installed with the old drivers, be careful not to install the printer as a network printer since the print server will push the old driver down to your new installation. This happens in the background and is frustrating since you think you're installing the correct driver but parts of the old driver are being installed instead.
Application and system crashes could even occur as the result of printer drivers not being properly supported in the Citrix environment. Users may find printing impossible because the UDP does not support every application and every printer--especially those applications and printers that have yet to be developed or released! All of these combined place a greater strain on the technical support department.
