Unknown command "Externalreferences"

For some reason my xref command and functionality is missing. I just installed an update regarding my Cad crashing when opening a large raster image. Whenever I enter the External reference command or even click the button in the toolbar it says "Unknown command "EXTERNALREFERENCES". Press F1 for help". I don't know how long exactly I've had this problem but that update was the only change I have made in a few weeks.

try
command:._externalreferences"entrer"

or

command:._-xref"enter"

Life will be much easier if we just have a printout of
all the commands that exist in Autocad kept handy.

Do any of the other palette-based commands work?

Are you using the core CUI menu file, or recently change toa  custom one?

Have you tried a repair of R2008? a reinstall?

LT2008 is not supported in Win7: so do you have it installed in Win7's XPMode, or something else?

Autodesk recommended uninstall and reinstall procedures are quite elaborate, share this with your I.T. it may help:
