i am having a problem where the letters are spiked when i print, they appear fine on the screen but not in the plot preview. i think it has to do with the plot style, but i don't know what setting i need to change to fix it. does anyone know how i can fix this problem.
Try different printer drivers. We had the issue and changed printer drivers. We were using a Lexmark printer and the driver that was loaded for that printer caused the issue. We used the same Lexmark printer with a different driver; can't remember exactly which one it was but i do think it was an HP driver and it fixed the problem. It did not have anything to do within ACAD plot styles etc..
Let me guess, it's the M, W, N, and V. Somehow your plot style settings
have been set to sharp corners. For a test, try to chose a different "Plot
style table (such as monochrome.ctb) in your page setup. See if you don't
get a different result. Don't worry about the color or quality, just verify
that your offending characters are printing correctly - ie. not spiked. If
they are still spiked, we can go from there.

Plot style settings for those pens, what did you change there?
Undo, open some of the core plot style tables and match Line End and Line
