Region will not explode

I recently created a shape using the polyline command, and then created a region from that to do physical property calcs, but when I tried to explode it back to lines, I got a message I have never seen before: Cannot explode REGION. The only thing I did differently to create this region from past ones, was using polyline to create the shape, most of the time I convert lines to polyline and join them. I have always been able to explode regions, anyone had this happen? There is nothing in the help file about this that I can find.

Here is a work around.

I hatched the region and then edited the hatch and used the Recreate Boundary option.
