digitizing tablet

I just got a CalCom DrawingBoard VI. with TableWorks Control Panel, version 10.07 Build 7
The 16Btn puck is working properly as a mouse in windows yet when I used it in AutoCAD 2009, AutoCAD crashes.

I have opened Options window, System tab, Current Pointing Device, and set it to Wintab Compatible Digitizer ADI 4.2 – Autodesk.

I have also done Tool, Tablet, Configure @ the command line it responds with :” _tablet
Your pointing device cannot be used as a tablet.”

Having this tool work would free up a lot of valuable screen real-estate. Edited by: B5481000 on Feb 25, 2009 12:26 PM

The problem is that the tablet driver is not wintab 1.1 compliant anymore.
Acad needs a wintab 1.1. All current drivers are wintab 1.0 which does not
give you the functionality that we used to get prior to about December 2002.

The reason is that a lawsuit against Calcomp, brought on by the guy who
originally wrote the 1.1 spec (and was later fired from Calcomp), forced
them to remove that functionality from the driver. It also forced them to
remove any and all previous drivers that had wintab 1.1 from their website.
Calcomp can't even give it to you if you asked for it.

You have a couple of options:

1. If you're still running XP 32-bit, you can try hunting down the last
properly working wintab 1.1 driver that Calcomp provided - Tabletworks
Version 7.46. It's out there on the web, hiding in various dark places. I
know that the DB VI has both USB and Serial connection options. However, I
don't know if you hooked your tablet up with the USB or a serial port. I
think the 7.46 driver will only try to find tablets hooked up via whatever
serial ports you have. It will work with a USB-to-serial adapter, because a
serial port is still seen by the system, but I don't know if it will see a
tablet hooked up only thru a purely USB connection.

2. Buy (for highway robbery-like 75 bucks) the Virtual Tablet driver from
Digitizer Technology Company at www.vtablet.com. They have drivers for XP
and Vista, 32 and 64 bit. This, by the way, is the guy who originally wrote
that wintab 1.1 spec and sued Calcomp. So this is your only option to stay
current with a changing OS and have proper tablet functionality in Acad.
The only thing is that, although it does support the DB VI, the driver does
not seem to support USB connection in Vista according to the website.
