Converting scanned drawings to AutoCad 2006-2009

We have many old paper drawings that we need to convert to dwg for space modifications. Does anyone have a recommended software package thar will allow for a fast convert to a usable autocad format?

Thanks

Hi James,

Given these are old paper drawings, they are probably not particularly
accurate compared with the implied accuracy of an AutoCAD drawing.
Hence you should only consider the effort of converting to drawing
format for those drawings where you will do future work incorporating
the drawing data.

For pure space saving and examination of data in the drawings, convert
the files to CAL format.

An organisation where I worked had 25,000 drawings converted to CAL
format and placed on four CDs enabling removal of many file cabinets.

The accuracy will be as good as the combination of the original drawing,
the scanner and the care taken by the operator.

For drawings you wish to use as drawings there are two products you
should consider, both of which can convert the CAL format and many other
raster formats to drawings.

Scan-2-Cad in the low price range and Raster Design in the higher price
range.

Scan-2-Cad is a very good product for converting raster to DXF files.

Raster Design (an Autodesk product running inside AutoCAD) takes a
different approach in that it gives raster snapped drawing by the
operator and other features to ensure an accurate transformation and so
is slower to use but creates a much more accurate output. It has a wide
range of other features which may of may not be relevant to your
organisation.

In a bigger company you would have room for use of both products.

Converting many drawings to AutoCAD or vector format can be time consuming and expensive for storage purposes. Best to just scan the drawings into a tif or cal format and convert them as needed. Converting the drawings can be done using the various software add-ons that is created for this purpose or hiring outside consultants can handle this project. Most companies will supply you with test or trial run for you to approve before and large quantity of drawings are completed.

If you have scanned Tiff or PDF files, you can try some raster to vector converters which can extract dots in images and integrate them as vector lines. I have a licensed copy of Raster to Vector Converter which supports AutoCAD R14~2009. You can get a try with it from here: .http://www.autodwg.com/vectorNow.htm Edited by: careymiller521 on Feb 2, 2009 8:08 AM

Most people we come across use WinTopo for this purpose.
