Autocad LT 2008 Has Stopped Working

OK guys. I need some serious help here. I am the IT person for a local firm. All the workstations use Autocad LT 2008. The system I'm working on is a brand new high end PC (installed in the past 2 months) about 5 days ago, AC 2008 started crashing on startup with "AutoCAD 2008 Has Stopped Working". Here is the output from the crash:

I racked my brains for a few days with no results so I wiped the hard drive, Installed a fresh oem Windows 7 64 bit, installed all windows updates, and tried again. The very first program i installed was the AC 2008. It still crashes with the same error being the ONLY software installed on the computer. I have tried running it in all different Compatibility modes, as Administrator, etc. Do you think a windows update could be causing this? Better yet, has anyone run across this so I dont have to troubleshoot the MANY windows updates i installed during setup. I'm not quiet sure where to go from here. Please Help. Thanks.

I am having the same exact problem. I am starting to believe it was some recent Windows updates...because I cannot get this installed on new PC's and we still have plety of licenses for our older versions.

At first I thought it was a fluke with a new machine and perhaps its chipset. But I just installed this on a rebuilt, older machine and it breaks. This is pretty serious and considering the age of this version, it may not get fixed.

I've not done this yet but wondering if we should try to install it PRE-Updates?

High end PC still running WinXP ro Vista, the only supported operating systems for LT2008? No other OS is supported, but Win7 has an XP mode that seems to help and Win8 has a Vista mode that seems to help too (both explained at Microsoft's site).

Good article...I'll check it out. I've had 07 and 08 running on Windows 7 and 8.1 with zero problems until now.

Thanks for the reply. All the machines in the firm are running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. All including this one are running LT 2008 without any issues until 7-10-14. That's the day it stopped working. I had thought of using XP Mode but i worried the video performance would be very poor. If all else fails, that may be the only option beside purchasing newer versions. So what version of Autocad did they start supporting Windows 7?

I went ahead and reloaded Windows 8.1 fresh on a machine and before any updates, loaded AutoCAD 2007 on it and it worked this time. I am installing updates now and will see how it reacts post updates. But I did finally get it installed and running. 🙂

On your Windows 7 machine: KB2962872 is causing this.  Remove and Hide this update.

If you install a new Win7 from scratch uninstall IE11! (As of Jul 10,2014)

Win 8.1 will be similar I bet.

The problem is with the mshtml.dll version 11.0.9600.17207

Many programs are crashing due to this, it is somehow linked to an embedded web browser problem.

I'm using win8.1 whit autocad 2008 (not LT) but a similar error message was "ad32lw has stopped working" and autocad does not work.

I removed KB2962872 ... autocad works! Now I have to reactivate it.
Thank you very much! You are great!
I do not want to update the 2008 version, I hope that does not oblige me with these "tricks"

I've given up...none of the suggested fixes have helped me. I just hope existing installs don't just suddenly break. New installs are impossible now.

You're welcome!

I was hoping today (Tue Aug 12 ) that the new patches for Windows would resolve this error for us all however no it has not been corrected!

In the description of the KB there were two references to IE crashing and I was very much hoping this would resolve it but nope.

So there are now (2) new KB's which may update your msthtml.dll file causing this to fail again.

*NEW* KB2929437 and KB2976627 that updates mshtml.dll  to version 11.0.9600.17239 that will cause this again.

If the errors start again tomorrow it's due to these new KB updates...
