OP what Patchy was telling you should work as well. if you have a command active and have selected objects and wish to zoom in, you can type 'z (note the apostrophe) and it invokes the zoom transparently....

On a large drawing, if you pick your selection and zoom in or out (i use the scroll wheel to zoom & pan) the objects will sometimes deselect - and it's quite frustrating.  Haven't found a way around it.  I'm using AutoCAD 2012 but this has been happening with earlier releases as well.
